DINING ROOMS
A gathering place
You'll spend a lot of time with family and friends in your dining room. That's why it's so important to create just the right lighting ambiance - with a look you love. A great chandelier can become the focal point for the entire room.
When choosing a chandelier, here are some things to think about:
The chandelier should be in proper proportion to the room, but more importantly, to the size of the table. As a general rule, we suggest that the minimum diameter of the chandelier should be about half the width of the table.
In a room with an 8-foot ceiling, the bottom of the chandelier should rest 29-34 inches above the table. For higher ceilings, add 3" for each additional foot of height.
The style should also influence how high the chandelier is hung. Hang more formal fixtures like crystal higher, and more casual fixtures like pendant- or tiffany-style will be more appealing hung at a lower level.
A fixture with a "down light" or with bulbs that point downward will provide better light for activities like card games or letter writing.
The inclusion of other types of dining room lighting can also enhance the look and feel of the room.

Other dining room lights
Dining room lighting doesn't have to stop with the chandelier. In fact, many chandeliers have matching wall sconces, buffet lamps and fixtures to coordinate lighting for other areas of the home.
For added drama and sparkle, install two recessed halogen spot lights to highlight your crystal chandelier.
Groupings - Matching pieces make a statement
If you'd like to carry a theme throughout one room - or in multiple areas of your home - consider purchasing a family of lights that are coordinated for different tasks. Groupings can include a chandelier, hallway fixture, wall sconce, table and floor lamps, and even matched mirror or pedestal sets.
